Mexico – Aztec Taxi

Documentary on taxidrivers in Mexico City

Mexico City is an autonomous world with 20 million people. The largest metropolitan area in the world leaves no one untouched.
But the is challenged by an iconic transformation. Thousands of Mexican taxidrivers are losing their leicense to drive their old Beetle. The symbol of the city, like the yellow cab in New York, is vanishing. The look and the feel of the city will never be the same again.

This unique transition is seen through the eyes of the taxidrivers. Always on the move, they see people performing, struggling, laughing and crying on every crossroad. A rare highly personal glimpse of every day life in a metropole of Mexico City. All characters are set against the backdrop of the Beetle vanishing.

An older experienced Beetle driver has seen the city and the people changing. A mother driver with a free spirit is struggling. A young drivers is working his way up to drive his own new Beetle. Intimite stories give insight in their lives, despite the struggle they also adapt to the new life in the city.

Stunning imagery of the city, rich in atmosphere. Candid and perceptive in its fimling approach, highly cinematic and moody in style.
